By Editors of Motor Trend
A truck in a tux? Not any more. The sport/utility vehicle cuts a broad swathe through the 21st-century automotive landscape. Think of a car genre-sporty, family, budget, luxury, utilitarian, gas-miser -- and you'll find its equivalent in today's sport/utility segment. What once was the territory of a handful of off-road specialists is now a lucrative business for everyone from Jeep to Porsche, Kia to Cadillac, offering everything from gutsy rock-crawlers to fuel-sipping hybrids.
For the majority of consumers, the ability of a sport/utility vehicle to keep going when the road runs out is no longer its raison d'etre. Instead, today's sport/utility vehicles tend to be defined by three key characteristics: (1) High ride height and high seating position relative to conventional automobiles; (2) a two-box body and multifunction interior that allows a combination of seating and load-carrying configurations; (3) all-wheel drive, either standard or optional across the range.

Posted on May 26, 2007 - 01:24 PM Topic: Nissan | | Nissan North America has a warning for customers: placing your electronic key too close to your cellphone could leave you stranded.
"The automaker is asking customers driving new models of two of its flagship sedans to keep their car keys and cellphones at least an inch apart to avoid disabling the "intelligent keys."
Cellphones kept near Nissan's I-Keys—wireless devices designed to allow drivers to enter and start their cars at the push of a button—can erase the electronic code on the keys, rendering them unable to unlock or start the cars."

Posted on May 22, 2007 - 05:17 AM Topic: News | Big praise for small SUVs:
The Subaru Forester Sports XT, the Forester X ($23,420) and the Honda CR-V EX ($24,645) join previously tested versions of the RAV4 ($30,328 for the top-rated Limited V6 and $23,163 for the four-cylinder Base version) as recommendations for all-around competence. A good bet for serious off-roading is the Nissan Xterra. (The S version CR tested cost $28,000.) Its strong V6 and truck-based platform also allow it to tow 5,000 pounds.
